El Hussein Restaurant & Luxor Restaurants

El Hussein Restaurant is a little restaurant in Luxor, Egypt.  It’s a tourist friendly restaurant and the meal was apart of my Luxor day tour.

There is one common thing in Egypt — cheap food.  The food in Egypt doesn’t cost much due to their unstable economy.  In addition, El Hussein has a menu in front of the restaurant; however, the menu excludes any prices.  It’s opportunity for restaurants to charge a bit more to make up for lost profits.  I asked my tour guide how much the meal cost and he avoided the question.  It gave me the impression that the tour companies were getting a different rate than walk in clients. El Hussein Restaurant.

Anyway, the restaurant is a few blocks from Karnak Temple.  It’s a two-story building among along a dirt road and there is dust everywhere on its door steps.  They did a great job of keeping the dust out of the restaurant.  The restaurant was clean.  The workers were storing food on the first floor as the waiters tend to guest on the second floor.  El Hussein Restaurant.

When I sat down, the restaurant had two tables filled.  During my meal, two more tables were filled with tourists on their tours. The only waiter on the staff was quick on getting food to its guest, but the service wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.  I didn’t expect much.  He basically took people’s orders, brought the food and drinks out, and cleaned the tables.  El Hussein Restaurant.

There were three meal options — Fish, Beef, or Chicken.  I decided to go with the chicken cause I was craving some chicken and rice.  The chicken and rice plate came with a bunch of Egyptian sides like bread, vegetables, a traditional Egyptian red lentil soup, and another traditional Egyptian soup.  Here are my thoughts:  El Hussein Restaurant.

  • Chicken and rice – The dish came with a grilled quarter chicken, short grain rice, and French fries.  The chicken was cooked decently and the charred skin really brought out the flavor.  It was lightly salted then garnish with some cilantro.  The rice had a nice moisture to it, but lacked any flavor to it.  The fries’s texture were really soft and tasted like it was slightly fried.  El Hussein Restaurant.

  • Red Lentil Soup – It had an assortment of flavors.  The turmeric and salt really brought the flavors out; the cumin gave it a strong aroma.  The overall dish wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t anything memorable.  It was good enough for a filler course.  El Hussein Restaurant.

Overall, I wouldn’t say El Hussein would be my first choice for a meal in Luxor.  However, with its limited choice, it wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t memorable.  It was apart of the tour and it was free.  The chicken and rice were the highlight of the entire meal.  El Hussein Restaurant.
