The Sherlock Holmes Pub is situated inside the Ramses Hilton in the middle of Cairo, Egypt. The Sherlock Bar has an old English charm to it; its decor reminds me of old English movies with Sherlock Holmes. The bar has booths, bar area and tables through it. It’s not one of the fanciest bars in town, but it’s perfect after a long day of sightseeing in Egypt.
Cairo is an interesting city. It’s old traditions are still in tact, but there are glimpses of Western culture in the Muslim country. The country prohibits alcohol sales and consumption with the exception of tourist hotels; however, the laws are often ignored by the Egyptians. As in American history, prohibition didn’t work out. I doubt it will in Egypt.
I decided to check out the pub my first night in Cairo. I had an early morning flight to Luxor the next day and I didn’t want to miss it. The bar’s convenience made it an easy choice among Cairo’s chaotic streets. It was either have a few drinks in the hotel bar or try to maneuver Cairo’s busy streets to find one around the area. It was an easy choice for me.
The Pub offers a menu filled with Western foods. The typical pub food menu consisting of alcohol, beers, burgers, and a few entrees. I ordered a Cuba Libre, a Sakara Gold (i.e., Egyptian beer), and a burger. Sherlock Holmes provided a snacks like dates, carrots, and celery.
The burger came out fairly fast. The burger came with the usual toppings like melted cheese, tomato, lettuces, onions, and some bell peppers. In addition, it was accompanied with a side of French fries. The burger was a little overcooked resulting in a dry burger; however, it wasn’t anything the Sakara and Cuba Libre couldn’t fix. The thick fries was piping hot and a little salt and pepper definitely helped its case. The whole meal including drinks didn’t cost more than 6 USD.
After a long day, Sherlock Holmes Pub is a good place to unwind. If you’re staying in the Ramses Hilton, it’s definitely convenient. Unfortunately, it’s a smoking pub. I didn’t mind because the pub is well ventilated and the prices were cheap.
