Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur is the famous hot dog stand in Reykjavík. It’s probably one of the cheapest meals a person could get in Iceland.
Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur is located in the middle of downtown Reykjavík. It’s been visited by the likes of Bill Clinton to Metallica’s lead singer James Hetfield. The little hot dog stand has a few sit down wood benches and stand up bar tables; however, there is no cover from Reykjavík’s brutal wind and cold weather. The town is notorious for its pricey food, but Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur offers some relief to your wallet.
I woke early to do some sightseeing in downtown Reykjavík. Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur was on my agenda for a mid-morning snack. As I stumbled around downtown, I found the cold to be intensify by the wind and I haven’t felt the back chill since my trip to Chicago during the first week of March. I found shelter between buildings but it wasn’t much cause the wind swept through the streets. I came to Reykjavík ill-prepared with only a sweatshirt packed.

After a few hours, I made my way to Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur to find no one in line except a man buying food for his kids sitting comfortably in the car. There was only two items of the menu and I asked for the most popular one. The lady wiped up the hot dog and place it in front of me within seconds. I paid the bill then set my food on one of the nearby tables as tour buses and cars drove by.
Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur hot dog had the veggies on the bottom. It’s strategically place there to add flavor to the hot dog cause it’s the first thing that hits my tongue when I bit into it. The hot dog had a bite to it like Chicago’s famous boiled hot dogs. The sour veggies blended well with the ketchup and mayonnaise-based sauce. The “works” is the only way to order this hot dog. It’s a solid hot dog and possibly could rival some of the best in Chicago.

Reykjavík is a pricey city for food. There aren’t many options for budget food, but Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur is an oasis in a city where the average meal costs $15 USD. How much did Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur hot dog and a drink cost? It’s about $3.50 USD. For the value and taste, Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur is a must visit while in Reykjavík. Now, only if Reykjavík had fried chicken like they do in Seoul.
