Apollo Bay Bakery & Great Ocean Road

Apollo Bay Bakery was fairly packed like Victoria Secret when they’re having a sale.  It’s right on the Ocean Road and had a bunch of interesting pastries like donuts.  It’s known for its Scallop Pies.

The place was packed when I arrived after having lunch at Scorched Grill.  However, the line moved really fast and they were efficient at taking orders then getting customers on their way.  Apollo Bay Bakery had a large looking glass case filled with sweets and everything carbs.  In addition, they offer gluten free pastries like muffins.

I wanted dessert and some snacks as we were trekking on Great Ocean Road.  I decided to get the following items:

  1. Sprinkles Donut – The donut was topped with some sprinkles on top of the sugar coated glaze.  The texture was dense and it didn’t taste like it came right out of the oven.  It didn’t have the soft texture that melted in your mouth like Krispy Kreme donuts. width=

  2. Cinnamon Ginger Donut – The texture was similar to the Sprinkle donuts.  It was dense and tasted like its been sitting on the shelf for some time.  The sugar coated donut had sweet yet spicy taste to it due to the cinnamon.  It was a decent donut but it could have been better if I received fresh out of the oven. width=
  3. Macadamia Cookie – The macadamia cookies was good but not great.  The cookie’s firmness overshadowed the dough’s slightly sweet and the macadamia’s earthy flavors.  I’m a soft cookie type of person who likes cookies to melt in my mouth. width=
  4. Croissant – Croissants are one of my all time favorite pastries in the world.  I always tend to order a croissant for breakfast or a snack.  Apollo Bay Bakery’s croissant was chewy but it lacked all of my favorite characteristics of a great croissant.  It wasn’t flaky and the dough wasn’t soft.  It was firm and chewy. width=

Apollo Bay Bakery products all had the same firm texture to them; it didn’t satisfy my sweet tooth like a good can of carbonated Coke.  For example, Krispy Kreme donuts come right out of the oven and melt in your mouth.  For some reason, Apollo Bay Bakery pastries didn’t.  I don’t really like to put much effort into anything so I found it annoying that I had to chew my food.  Overall, it’s a pretty cool bakery but I wasn’t too impressed with the pastries.
